What it Means to Be Spiritual
“But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?”
1 Corinthians 3:1-3 ESV
The flesh is the opposite of the spiritual; we cannot be in the flesh and be spiritual at the same time. We choose one and lose the other. In Matthew 6:24, Jesus teaches us that we cannot serve two masters; we will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. This knowledge existing as Truth must be revealed in our lives and our choices. How we decide to respond, our reactions to emotions and thoughts, and what we are meditating on day and night reveal to us if we are spiritual or in the flesh.
“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.”
1 Corinthians 3:16-17 ESV
The body is the holy temple of the Spirit of God. The body is not what is referred to as ‘the flesh’ in the first-mentioned Scripture. We should not destroy God’s temple by being in the flesh, and we know that this ‘flesh’ is the fallen nature of mankind, and this fallen nature is what separated us from God by bringing forth death, for God is the life, and we needed reconciliation to Him and surely received it through Jesus Christ.
“For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.”
1 Corinthians 2:11-16 ESV
We are spiritual because we are not in the flesh, and we are spiritual and not in the flesh because we have the Spirit of God, the mind of Christ. As living in the Spirit and Word of God, though always contrite, we should not be fixated on what we might have done wrong for we are fixated on and living in the constant pursuit of getting it right through the Spirit. We are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, as per 2 Corinthians 5:21. We do not live as condemned and we do not abuse the grace of God.
“What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?”
Romans 6:1-2 ESV
We cannot continue to identify as sinners, for that was for a time that existed and went, for we became born again of the Spirit of God and are made children of God, just like Jesus is, for we are now born just like Jesus was and led by the Spirit of the Father just like Jesus was on earth. While living in this truth and reality, calling oneself a sinner is very well blasphemous, for one would be speaking of the blood of Jesus Christ, the Mighty God, and saying the sacrifice and blood of Jesus Christ achieved nothing. We should all be able to boldly say, “The sacrifice and blood of Jesus Christ has made me a saint for I am cleansed of all my sins and will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
“… For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.”
Romans 14:23 ESV
Let us remember daily that living in jealousy, strife, and outside of faith is living an unspiritual life in the flesh and it is profaning the temple of God. In whatever we do or say, we proclaim the kingdom we are of. We must be careful not to be in partnership with the spirit of the world. We are not influenced to hate, to follow blindly without discernment, or to not spiritually discern whatever is in front of us.
We walk in the fruit of the Spirit. We are led by His spirit of wisdom, spirit of knowledge, spirit of understanding, spirit of counsel, spirit of might, the spirit of the fear of the Lord, and indeed we are led by the Spirit of the Lord. We are spiritual. Though we may fall, it is our heritage, on earth, to fall on God’s hand. God catches us, and He equips and teaches us on how not to fall. He is our Teacher, Counselor, Helper, Comforter, and we are equipped for every good work.
