What Are Emotions and What Is Their Purpose

With the rise of awareness, there has been an uproar about “being in touch with your emotions”. I pondered this subject long and hard for about 3 years and I have reached my conclusion without a shadow of a doubt. Feelings are not the answer, they are the betraying enemy. Professional mental health doctors will tell us to feel our feelings in the name of processing our emotions for them to dissipate. This I do not disagree with because healing is very specific, unlike any other internal process.

But for everyday living, emotions are the bearer of all the troubles and evil of the world. Why did a person assault another person? Was morality or sense not enough to stop them? Apparently not. They weren’t considering anything else but what they were feeling in their sinful body. Emotions, and the sensation of them which are feelings, cannot be lived by because of the existence of the knowledge of evil in the fallen human.

Emotions Are Fallen (Inherently Evil)

Emotions are from the mind, which is brought about by the physical brain, which all constitute the darkened reality of the human being and their body which holds this unfortunate reality. People may consider thoughts to be more evil but we think what we think because it is what we are feeling. Thoughts are the words of the emotions we are feeling. Meaning that emotions are what make our thoughts to be what they are. If we control our emotions, we are controlling our thoughts.

Unless we are healing from a moment, which is done through processing and revisiting the moment by feeling the emotions and feelings that we hadn’t processed before, we should completely be out of our emotions through mindfulness. Use any of your senses to root your attention to your moment instead of your attention being on one emotion or another. Keeping your internal attention, which is your spirit (the real you), busy with one thing means it is not doing any other thing.

Be Self-Controlled, Not Feelings Controlled

We should learn how to step in and out of our emotions as if they are in a box that lives inside of us (because they are). If not, we will be completely lacking in self-control as the entirety of our lives is controlled by our emotions. Whether one kills someone as a crime of “passion”, or get in a car intoxicated because they “feel” like they can drive, or the worst, feel like there isn’t a God just because they can’t physically see Him or for whatever other reason, and spend all of eternity in eternal death (hell) because they died without Christ, who is the only Source of life and light, emotions are not the truth.

Feelings are nothing to go by. I believe they are no better just because they are positive feelings, like happiness. That happiness will leave us like it never loved us. And you know what, it doesn’t love us because if it did it would not leave us. Happiness wants to control us. Emotions are fallen. You know what won’t leave us because it loves us? Joy. Joy is found only in Christ, the Mighty God, and therefore it isn’t fleeting or reliant on external factors. Joy isn’t an emotion, it is of the Spirit.

Emotions and Their Feelings Are Inferior

Having Christ through the Holy Spirit living inside us is the only way to have these priceless riches of life ever within us, no matter what we may be going through. These are spirits and are spiritual, they are not carnal or from the physical fallen body and nature. They are from the Spirit of God Himself, and these are namely joy, peace, love, kindness, gentleness, goodness, patience, self-control, and faithfulness, which surpass any fleeting emotions.

Money, sex, a lover, a relationship, or whatever one makes a god and idol in their hearts will betray them by being ever insufficient in being a reliable source of anything good they may need because these things don’t hold the key to goodness. Only God, who is eternal and eternally available as a Source of all good as the Creator of all goodness from His good nature, can satisfy our thirst.

How do we know Christ and God? He is certainly not an image of a white man, for any image that claims to be God is an idol. That white man is the Jesus of the world. But the true Jesus is found only in the Bible and in those who have believed He died for their sins and was raised on the third day by the Spirit of God, and this Spirit of God now resides in them as the Source of all their needs and wants.

Live by joy and forget about the betraying happiness. Live by peace and forget about offense, pride, envy, anger, bitterness, and all other emotions. Step into your emotions as an act of self-control from the Holy Spirit, but not to be controlled by emotions, but rather to heal them.

Always be the one to navigate their way but never be navigated by them. Only be led by the Holy Spirit, and be a child of God, affording to call heaven your home for your eternal spirit for all eternity because you are God’s heir, just as Jesus Christ had made you to be (like Him).

May your mind be renewed, your faith be strengthened, and your peace be anchored in Christ, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
