Immersing Yourself in the Act of Forgiveness

The Essence of Forgiveness

It has not since long ago been brought to the awareness of most that forgiveness is for the forgiver not just the forgiven. This is most true. Forgiving a person who has wronged us may free us more than it may free them. And in order to forgive, we need to heal. Forgiveness is the result of healing [the healing process], and choosing forgiveness as we heal.

In truth, forgiving them may actually be solely for us as they might have to forgive themselves too, and if they do not, they may be stuck there but certainly not with us as we would have rid ourselves of the baggage by forgiving them.

Forgiveness is also not just for the drastic wrongs done to us. It is for the small wrongs done to us. Like a stranger bumping into our shoulder while walking. Forgiveness is a spirit that should ever dwell in us, especially for the little things in life done by people or loved ones that may annoy us but not necessarily bruise us.

When a friend says something rude jokingly, or we are offended by a sibling. If forgiveness is ever present in us, we are able to instantly forgive those minor wrongs, freeing ourselves from resentment, anger, bitterness, or perhaps even feeling like a victim.

Especially with minor incidents, people do not always have to come to us first to say how much they’re sorry. If forgiveness is ever in us, those minor wrongs and offences will be found by forgiveness if they happen, and we will thus be internally protected whether they say sorry or not.

Thus, in realizing forgiveness for its true purpose, it is wise to not have to hear the word ‘sorry’ in order to forgive. When forgiveness is ever present inside us, this is a goodness for ourselves too as we will be ever forgiving ourselves and therefore harnessing self-compassion and self-love.

Self-Forgiveness Is Impactful

Self-forgiveness is not a popular notion at all but we ourselves perhaps need the most forgiveness. Even if it is solely the other person who is wrong, it is wise and self-love and self-care to forgive ourselves too, in simple terms, for finding ourselves in a position where we are able to be hurt regardless of it not being our fault at all. Especially since we still tend to blame ourselves and feel shame even knowing it was out of our control since we are not all-knowing like God.

It may not be required as it is not our fault, but it is wise and a healthy relationship with ourselves to practice self-forgiveness. Remembering that our relationship with ourselves is the most important and other relationships actually stem from our own relationship with ourselves.

The quality of the relationship with ourself stems from our relationship and intimacy with God Almighty because only our Creator has our true identity, so only in Him can we know and have a relationship with ourselves.

Forgiveness is a virtue that is ever good because it is a principle of the good God, and we do not need to first be or feel like a victim to practice it.

See forgiveness as an emotional and mental health practice, for it is our emotional and mental health that suffers un-forgiveness. Practice conscious breathing (because we tend to not be breathing adequately) and mindfulness to instil internal stillness that will make us not reactive but proactive.

Imagine for yourself a life where no one can offend you, where you are free from people’s opinions or judgements simply because whatever they may say or do that is offensive is welcomed by forgiveness.

That sounds like a superpower, like a beautiful reality. It sounds like a shield from negativity at any given moment. And it certainly sounds like a thing to be envied.

So, protect and shield your mental and emotional health with the spirit of forgiveness ever inside you. Let not your wellness be at the mercy of others. At the mercy of how they themselves are feeling or hurting. This is self-love, self-care, and self-control, empowered only by the Spirit of God.
